Winter Break Housing

Students may request break housing for the winter break period or to accommodate a late departure or early return from winter break. Students will receive a notification email and reminder emails to their MIX email address when Winter Break Housing registration opens in early October, with registration instructions. Students can also return to this page in early October to register.  The registration deadline is Friday, December 4th. 

The West Virginia University Residence Halls are closed for winter break from Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. through Friday, January 8th at 12 p.m. All students who have not registered in advance for Winter Break Housing must leave their Residence Hall space by 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 12th, and may not return until 12 p.m. on Friday, January 8th. 

Students may register for Winter Break Housing and stay in their assigned rooms during the winter break period, from Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. through Friday, January 8th at 12 p.m., for an additional fee.  (Residence hall contracts do not include the cost of room and board during official WVU break periods). Residence hall access will be available ONLY to students who have registered for housing for the entire winter break period; guests are not permitted.

Students who do not need to stay in their residence hall space for the entire winter break may register for a late departure or an early return.   

Students registering for the late departure winter break housing option may remain in their assigned residence hall space from Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. until Saturday, December 19th at 12 p.m. for an additional fee. (Residence hall contracts do not include the cost of room and board during official University break periods.) Residence hall access will be available ONLY to students who have registered for the late-departure winter break housing option; guests are not permitted.  Students who have registered for the late-departure winter break housing option may not remain in their residence hall after 12 p.m. Saturday, December 19th.  

Students registering for the early return from winter break housing option may return to their assigned residence hall space on Friday, January 1st, at 12 p.m. and stay through Residence Hall spring semester opening on Friday, January 8th, at 12 p.m for an additional fee. (Residence hall contracts do not include the cost of room and board during official University break periods.) Residence hall access will be available ONLY to students who have registered for the late-departure winter break housing option; guests are not permitted.  Students who have registered for the early return from winter break housing option may not return to their residence hall until 12 p.m. Friday, January 1st.

Break Period Dates and Pricing

Winter Break Housing is available from Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. through Friday, January 8th at 12 p.m. Break period housing options and pricing are as follows:

• First Week of Winter Break (Late Departure): Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. to Saturday, December 19th at 12 p.m. Residence hall access will be available ONLY to students who have registered for the late-departure winter break housing option; guests are not permitted. The cost for First Week of Winter Break (Late Departure) Housing is $175. Residents may not remain in their residence hall after Saturday, December 19th at 12 p.m. (card access will be deactivated after this time, and residence halls will not be staffed). 
• Last Week of Winter Break (Early Return): Friday, January 1st at 12 p.m. through Friday, January 8th at 12 p.m. Residence hall access will be available ONLY to students who have registered for the early return winter break housing option; guests are not permitted. The cost for Last Week of Winter Break (Late Departure) Housing is $175. Residents may not return to their residence hall until Friday, January 1st at 12 p.m. (card access will not be active until this time, and residence halls will not be staffed). 
• Entire Winter Break - Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. through Friday, January 8th at 12 p.m. Housing will be available in all Residence Halls for the entire winter break. This option is designed for residents who are unable to return home during the break period. The cost for the Entire Winter Break Housing option is $500.
• If your travel arrangements cannot be accommodated by the options listed above (e.g., short-term stays), we encourage you to explore local hotel options. Many search engines and travel booking sites have up-to-date hotel/motel information and pricing information. You may also view options through the  Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau.          

• Residence halls will close on Saturday, December 12th at 12 p.m. for Winter Break. All students who have not registered in advance for a Winter Break Housing option must leave their Residence Hall space by 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 12th.  
• Advance registration is required for Winter Break Housing. Registration will open in early October. No refunds (partial or full) will be granted after the registration deadline or if a student registers and does not use the space during all or part of their registration period.  
• If there is little or no demand in any of the residence halls for Winter Break Housing, Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to close one or more of these locations.
• Only current residents with existing housing contracts (2026-2027) are eligible for break housing.
• Services and staffing available during break periods are limited.

Terms and Conditions

Only those who register online and agree to the following terms and conditions will be allowed to stay in the residence halls during any WVU break period:

• Additional room fees apply ($175 for Late Departure for Winter Break, $175 for Early Return from Winter Break, or $500 for all of Winter Break). 
• Full and/or partial refunds will not be issued for cancellations after December 4th (the registration deadline) or for a registered student who does not use the space during all or part of their registration period. 
• Residents are subject to all policies outlined in the University Student Code of Conduct and Residence Hall Community Standards of Conduct.
• To ensure everyone's safety, no guests are permitted.
• Dining halls will be closed during the break period; Mountie Bounty may be used in designated locations. Visit the dining website for more information. 
• No linens are provided during the break period. 
• Fitness centers are not open during the break period. 
• Mail service and package delivery will not be available during the break period. 
• Staffing in the Residence Halls will be limited during the break period.
